SENER, as part of a construction consortium, is performing the turnkey project for the Bokpoort thermosolar power plant, near the city of Upington, for the Department of Energy of the Republic of South Africa.

The 50 MW plant will have the SENERtrough® parabolic trough technology –a system developed and patented by SENER and currently installed in 20 projects– and it will be equipped with a nine-hour molten salt storage system similar to the one the company has already used in 20 thermosolar power plants. Both technologies are fully mastered by SENER, who has already participated in over 25 thermosolar power plants around the world.

Within the construction consortium, SENER is in charge of the engineering work. Additionally, it also has a 30% share in the aforementioned construction consortium. The construction is progressing at a good pace, with the facility projected start commercial operations in November 2015.

One of the greatest challenges SENER has encountered in this project has been adapting to the unique characteristics of the Republic of South Africa, especially with regard to its construction methods and standards.
